vista beta 2

Vista beta 2

Pardon my ignorance;but when Vista Beta 2 does arrive; will I be able to set it up on my laptop that has XP Pro already installed? Run 2 O.S.'s? It will have only 1Gb of RAM for the laptop.

Yeh, you can partition it using the Disk Management software in MMC, also with Partition Magic - then when installing Vista, just stick it on the empty volume.
Please note though - you can't install on a RAW volume, so best just stick it as a Logical NTFS drive :o)

Yes, you will need to install it on a separate physical partition though. But dual booting is just fine. -- -- Andre Windows Connected | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta

Again fellas;you come to my rescue;when it becomes available and when I get that new laptop; I'm definitely trying it. Just like Jason; I didn't get in soon enough or have the resources to afford an MSDN subscription. If you guys can tolerate me;then I'll definitely have more questions as how to set it up when the time comes, Again you guys have been GREAT:-) "Zack Whittaker" wrote in message

Gerry; It will probably work for a time. But no one that I know recommends more than one OS on a partition. In fact, whenever I see the question, it is strongly recommended against putting more than one OS on a partition. To many possibilities for conflicts. Since Vista is still an unfinished products, that just adds to the possible complications.

That only hides potential conflicts. There are a number of shared files under the Program Files folder. Installing two different versions of the OS can easily cause problems when versions of those files get out of sync. It is never recommended to install two versions of Windows on the same partition. -- Tom Porterfield

"It is never recommended to install two versions of Windows on the same partition."
Not exactly so - parallel (same partition) installations are a recommended procedure for troubleshooting an initial/original OS installation.

No it's not. Parallel (different drive or partition) installations can be used, but never on the same partition. -- Tom Porterfield

Only in extreme cases and with the intent to do a Clean Install immediately after whatever issue is resolved.

You being a so-called "New user" I can tell you that partitioning a system can be risky business if you do it while you have the OS installed. Must people accomplish this byway of some sort of partitioning software such as Partition Magic. But, Partition Magic can be a dangerous program as well. One foul move from this software and you can kiss any and all installed programs goodbye. You'll need a full reinstall.
Best
way to accomplish this is to do so before you've installed anything. Or wipe the drive clean, then set-up your partitions. But, you can use something like Partition Magic if you wish. I'm also sure there are other programs that do the same thing as Partition Magic.

PRINT "Windows XP ERROR" GOTO 1 END

it would only have been in these cases where I would have done this (retrieve user data before clean installing windows after major fault for example)
guess I'll have to whip out partition magic b4 the windows vista beta.
cheers for the replies gerryR

Sorry about that previous post. Just caught the answer in another room.

As it looks, http://www.microsoft.com/ main web site has been updated stating that Beta 2 now available to Developers and IT Professionals. This could be a sign that MS is about to deploy beta 2 to the public that is not part of MSDN or the Connect beta testers.
-- Jason

And on the page (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/) that is linked to that announcement it states...
"In the coming weeks, Microsoft will start the Windows Vista Customer Preview Program (CPP) for developers and IT professionals who are not members of the subscription services."

Be careful what you read into the web page. MSDN is designed for developers. Tech Net is designed for IT Professionals.
MSDN Operating System subscribers have Beta 2 for download now and will have a DVD soon. TechNet subscribers will get the DVD the next shipment.
Both
these groups already have Beta 2 or have a firm schedule for receiving Beta 2. Availability time for the public is still vague.

downloaded vista beta 2 today (was so excited) after an hr and a half the download finished so i burned it too disk setup started typed in my vista product key and it started too load got to 2% then i got an error message 80070241 so i decided to do a fresh reinstall of windows vista and formated my hard drive (just as well i backed up my files) as it did the same as the above so i reinstalled win xp pro and downloaded the vista beta 2 (just incase the download was corrupted this time i decide too run setup from my desktop but againb was meet with 80070241 i downloaded it again just in case and this time went and found out if my sytem was compatable with vista which it is third download burnt it too disk still the same problem any help or advice or if anyone else has exerienced this let me know please

Try burning the disk at a very low speed, 2x recommended. If that does not work, try mounting the ISO using Virtual Drive tools such as Daemon Tools or NERO Image Drive. If that does not work, extract the contents of the ISO to a directory in XP and launch setup from there. -- -- Andre Windows Connected | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta

Andre, I'm curious. Have you successfully installed Vista? If so would you list the step by step you used? Maybe I am doing it all wrong, but I get the same error every way I try it. Heres what I have done so far:
Download ISO, and burn it to DVD using Roxio DVD Builder @ 2X. Apparently successful as it autostarts and tries to install.
Attempted upgrade install under XP. Errored @ 15% Attempted clean install under XP. Same result. Attempted clean install booting from the DVD on startup. Same result. Attempted clean install on fresh new hard drive. Same result.
It this time I am downloading for the 3rd time just to be sure I get a good ISO.
Any ideas will be appreciated.

I would suggest you check the integrity the ISO you have downloaded.
I use the one from Ahead Nero http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/eng/Nero_MD5_Verifier.html
Here are the MD5/CRC values for x86 or x64 depending on which every ISO you downloaded:
x86 - File Size = 3.12 GB (3,355,598,848 bytes) - CRC Value = 0x67E089E0 - MD5 Value = 0E733AB1A8E8FF9A8684FD3639332773 x64 - File Size = 4.01 GB (4,309,368,832 bytes) - CRC Value = 0x48697711 - MD5 Value = E43502D0A15EADD551119D5639859E04
Paste the MD5 Checksum for either x64 or x86 depending on which one you want check in Step 1, Step 2 - Browse to where you stored the ISO on your drive and open it and it will automatically start the varification process and generate the has in the third field, if it matches Step 1, then you are safe.
I launch my setup from within XP x86 and select the partition I created for Vista x86 (20 GBs), setup copies files, expands files (restarts at 27%), continues setup, restarts, installs features, installs updates, restarts, completes setup, restarts, takes me to the OOBE page, configures keyboard, user account information, network information, restarts and I live happily every after with Vista. -- -- Andre Windows Connected | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta

You guys are not going to believe this. I finally got Vista to install, heres what happened and how I did it:
1.
I pasted the download link into FIREFOX of all things. that is the only way I could get a good download.
2. Burned the ISO to DVD using Roxio DVD builder @ 2X speed.
3. Copied all the install files to the hard drive in a folder labeled "Vista Install" and ran the installation from there. It took 2 1/2 HOURS to install.
When Vista started for the first time, all I got was a black screen, working mouse, and the build number noted in the lower right corner. NO graphics at all and nothing works. I had to roll back the installation and am now back to XP.
Talk about disapointment! Any thoughts? My machine is a 1.4 Gig celeron with a GIG of RAM

I just downloaded Vista Beta 2, and I have a question. I have a Hewlett Packard, so my hdd is partitioned with all Windows XP Backup in the partition d: drive; I was wondering if I install the Vista Beta 2, will it leave the drive alone and safe, or will if merge the drives and screw up the backup? I heard Windows Vista Beta 2 has an upgrade feature, just wondering if it will keep everything kosher incase I need to take it back out and reinstall Windows XP. Seeing as though this copy will be around until June 2007, does this mean that the status of the copy will go from "Evaluation Copy" to "Retail Copy" when the final version is available for the public?

No, the Beta is timebombed to stop working entirely on June 1 2007. It will not turn into a retail version.

So it will remain a beta version even after the retail version hits? Will this beta have the same features and eligible for the same updates as a retail version when January 2007 rolls around?

No, this is a beta version, there is one gauranteed free "update" if you authenticate, which is the RC! version. They might push out updates through Windows Update like they did for the mobile devices.
At the end of the Beta Period/RC1 period, this software will no longer be supported.
MSFT COULD offer a discount on the retail version to help drive their numbers, they could send some free copies to people who actually reported bugs, or they could tell everyone to go jump in a lake. I imagine they have several different scenarios they are looking at, but can gaurantee they do not know exactly what they are going to do for/to evey member of the 2 MILLLION downloaders.

Us testers ought to form a group and urge Microsoft to give us a complimentary copy for helping them define their product.

ha,
you want a free copy of windows for getting to see it a year before its released?
I've tested since win95 ... including the original lame Microsoft Network .... i have felt happy just to see it a head of time.
these days there are probably 5,000,000 testers ... the real testers did all the work before we even saw a screen shot.

Every beta tester who has purchased XP will be entitled to a discount by purchasing Vista Upgrade edition instead of a full edition. This is one for one for each copy of XP you have purchased.

I am trying to install vista beta 2 but after i type in my product key i get the error message "The procedure entry point DecodePointer could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll" I was wondering if anyone could help me get past this error, I have the file on my computer located at C:\WINDOWS\system32\kernel32.dll . Also when the error message comes up, its says that the product can not be registered, It may be becuase I tried to install it on my computer, but It shut down because the power went out during installation, so I had to reinstall xp to get around the problem I was haveing with that, and now that message comes up. If it is because the product key was already used where do I get a new one or how do I get past it. thank you

It looks like a file corruption. This may be a problem with the dvd if you downloaded Vista. It could be a bad download or the result of burning the image to disc at too high a speed.
What edition of XP is now on your computer? What edition of Vista are you trying to install? What are the specs of your computer?
You can install Vista by booting with the dvd. If you are installing Vista x86 you should be able to install from the XP desktop no matter what edition of XP you use. If you have a 64-bit capable machine and are installing Vista x64 you must boot with the dvd if you are using XP x86 but may do it either way if you are using XP x64.
You should not be installing Vista on the only volume on a computer you use for your primary computer. If you have an available partition or available drive you should install it there unless this is only a spare, test machine.

I gather that the new beta release isnt compatible with SATA drives, have tried many times to install but keeps hanging right on registration key insertion, have read some of the comments in the newsgroup and seems i am not the only one with SATA drives having this problem. So i guess ill have to wait till Microsft brings out the proper version of Vista and hopefully that will be SATA enabled.

Had a bear of a time here, but finally got it installed with the Promise SATA RAID controller set to IDE mode. It is "absolutely" necessary - or at least was in my case - to have the SATA drivers available during the intial setup. If you don't have the SATA or mainboard driver disk available, you should be able to download them from the manufacturers website. Just be sure you have the ones for WinXP.

Does it mean that I must only insert my mainboard cd-rom to make the computer recognize my HD-sata (maxtor) during the vista's installation ? I tryed many times with the 5308 version, but my computer hadn't seen the hard drive while booting from dvd. I have a floppy disk (Promise Sata) to install the HD under win xp, but it does'nt work for vista. So, is the motherboard's cd-rom a soluce ?
(scuse for my english...)

How can I uninstall? I can't do a system restore, Vista is not on the install/uninstall list. I cannot get online due to 1394 Net Adapter. I can't reboot with the original Windows xp SP2 CD. What gives? Why couldn't simple instructions be included on the CD to show how to uninstall? Laptop is a Dell Inspiron less than 6 months old. What would a problem with your Firewire port (1394) have to do with anything?
As for restoring, your simplest solution is the Restore partition that came on your laptop, unless you killed it.
Google DSRFix and it will have a program to fix your ability to do a restore.

Why, exactly, can't you boot to your XP CD. There are a number of posts here about uninstalling. Requires both a fixboot and fixmbr, in addition to reformatting the Vista partition and installing XP.

So there are no problems, what is your setup on disks. Do you have more than 1 disk and 1 partition, and how are you set up. You need to go into the Recovery console if it is available so check on that. It is the option R on that first selection screen. If you are using SATA you may need drivers later also, so specify if you have that and what chipset your computer uses (ie nVidia, VIA etc). Also you will need to sign on to the CD as administrator to reformat the Vista partition later.

You can't. MS did provide information on this on the Customer Preview Program page at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/preview.mspx
"In addition, once you install Windows Vista Beta 2 (or RC1) you cannot roll back to the previous operating system installation-you will either have to acquire and install the final released edition of Windows Vista or reinstall a previous edition of Windows. "
What you can do is reinstall XP. To do this you must reset the BOOT ORDER on your computer from 1. HDD 2. CD/DVD drive to 1. CD/DVD drive 2. HDD in the Setup (BIOS) on your computer so that you can boot from the XP cd. Consult the instructions that came with your computer to see how to enter Setup.
Why are you looking for Vista in its own Add/Remove Programs? That is for .... well... programs.

In his second post he said he got to the first decision point on the XP CD where you have the R and Install, but install wouldn't highlight or run. He has boot order correct. I personally haven't ever had that situation, maybe you have.

That is for ... well... programs.

Why couldn't Microsoft include a simple uninstall instruction on their CD? -- Alfred The (not so) Great

No. Maybe a speck on the cd. Can't imagine that one.
